Archival Research + Historical Analysis + Expert Reports

Hello and welcome to Storey Historical Research.

My name is Kenton Storey, and I am a professional historian based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with a PhD in comparative history from the University of Otago, New Zealand. I am a specialist in the study of Canadian colonialism and Indigenous peoples with a monograph focused on the history of Aboriginal title on Vancouver Island.

Since the beginning of 2015, I have worked as a freelance historical researcher investigating the history of treaty-making in Canada, the policies and practices of the historic Indian Affairs Department, Indian Residential Schools, and settler colonialism across the Canadian West. A highlight of this work includes appearing before the federal court as an expert witness in relation to a report focused on the history of two First Nation bands from the Treaty Four region. I offer services in archival research and expert report writing that will equip you with the historical evidence and analysis needed to educate the court.

Areas of Expertise

Archival Research

Knowing how to search goes hand in hand with knowing where to search.  With experience researching at Libraries and Archives Canada locations in Ottawa and Winnipeg, BC Archives, and the Hudson's Bay Company Archives, I can easily navigate different historical databases to uncover the relevant sources you've been looking for.

Literature review

The disciplines of history and law approach the past with different agendas. With my knowledge of the academic historical literature related to First Nations peoples, Aboriginal title, settler colonialism in the Canadian West, and across the British Empire, I can help you find out what has already been said and done by historians.

database Management

Archival sources cannot speak for themselves.  A professional historian interrogates archival records in the context of their original production and transmission, paying attention to the worldviews of a distant yesterday.  My experience with database management can aid you with the task of sifting through large in-house databases and discovery collections to identify relevant historical material.

Research Plan Design

Planning is at the heart what I do.  Let me craft a research plan that suits your needs and budget.

Expert Report Writing

I have experience completing multiple book-length historical reports. I have also appeared before the federal court as an expert witness in relation to an expert report. Justice Michael Phelan in Watson v. Canada (T-2153-00/T-2155-00) has described my research and testimony this way: “I overall found him a credible witness whose conclusions were well-explained and are consistent with other evidence.”

access to information requests

Requesting information from the Government of Canada can be a daunting and time-consuming process. I can assist in the management of this task, drawing on my experience making Access to Information and Privacy Requests to Libraries and Archives Canada, the Records Office, and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada.

The study of history is a study of causes. The historian...continuously asks the question ‘Why?’
